Design of impermeable plant mix bituminous surfacings with a coarse surface texture

The importance of surface 'macro' texture on roads carrying medium and high speed traffic and the simultaneous requirement for an impermeable surfacing layer are discussed. Target values of 500 um for surface texture depth (sand patch) and 5 per cent volume for air void content were set. Two mix compositions were selected after a laboratory study and laid in a full scale road trial which included two standard Country Roads Board mixes for comparison. An examination of the experimental sections 2 years after construction indicated that, in the wheelpath area, texture depths in excess of the target value were obtained but the maximum air void content was exceeded by a small margin. It is concluded that impermeable mixes with a reasonably coarse texture can be manufactured and a tentative design procedure is put forward.
