Cycle usage in north Canberra

The north Canberra cycle path was completed in 1973 and was the first major cycle facility built in Canberra. In 1974, a usage survey was conducted by the National Capital Development Commission in order to gauge the level of activity along this path. Another survey was undertaken in May 1977 to collect information on user characteristics and patterns of usage and, in November 1977, a third set of counts was made at four locations along the cycle path. In addition, late in 1975 approximately 2250 households were surveyed on a wide range of transportation issues to assist the commission in formulating its short term transportation plan. Part of the data collected referred to the ownership and usage of bicycles. This paper presents information from these four surveys, and patterns of usage in 1974, 1975 and 1977 are discussed and compared. Using the cycle survey data and other relevant traffic information, changes in usage patterns are explained and possible future trends identified.
