Traffic flow theory and applications

After introducing basic traffic flow variables and their interrelationships, this chapter examines the application of some well known probability theory to traffic problems. With this background, those areas of elementary flow theory which are most useful in practice - headway distributions, gap acceptance and queueing - are presented and illustrated by typical applications. The final section of the chapter draws upon the results of the preceding material in a discussion of road capacities and levels of service. (A).
