Electric vehicles: a federal environmental view

Governments, both Australian and overseas, have become increasingly concerned with the environmental impact, including resource use implications, of present motor vehicle transportation. Mild encouragement of electric vehicles, as one avenue promising a partial solution to these problems, is therefore being given, although any substantial assistance by the Australian government will be subject to environmental impact proceedings, legislation for which is in the pipeline. Solution to pollution and other problems of transportation, however, demands a very broad environmental analysis covering more options than electrochemical alternative alone. This paper discusses the sorts of issues involved in such an analysis. (A)
