Cost considerations in road construction in Indonesia

The cost components in road construction are discussed in this paper. The components are : 1) earthworks which includes both cutting and fill operations and the shaping and compaction of the subgrade. The cost of earthworks for a particular road will be dependent upon the geometrical standards to which the road to be built, and the water content and density control required during the compaction of the subgrade. 2) Basecourse and sub-base layers. There are two types of road pavement failure i.E. Surface failure where potholes occur and structural failure in which case the pavement fails due to shear failure in basecourse, sub-base and subgrade. The key to overcome this situation is not to increase the base course thickness but to provide a sub-base. 3) Drainage system. Pavement drainage maintenance is essential to keep drainage systems operating, particularly in Indonesia where a combination of high rainfall and dense population tends to result in drains being clogged up with silt and rubbish at a rapid rate.
