Research on the measurement of pavement performance in Australia

This paper was also issued as Australian Road Research Board internal report air 000-45. In any analysis of the adequacy of a road network the definition and measurement of pavement performance is a key factor. Performance has been measured by a variety of objective physical measures and by the subjective serviceability rating approach. These techniques are reviewed briefly before a more detailed statement of Australian research findings and practice in the use of the benkelman beam deflection and the roughness meter is given. The research produced an evaluation procedures, a standard calibration method, a trailer based calibration or measurement unit, semi and fully automated recording systems and a continuous trace procedure for examining in detail the roughness of suspect pavement sections (a).
