Properties of air cooled slag road base for rational pavement design

The paper presents the results of an investigation to determine the properties of air cooled blast furnace slag relevant to the use of the material in a road pavement base course. A single property, resilient modulus, used in the rational design of a road pavement structure, was chosen to characterise the material. The results of the investigation have shown air cooled blast furnace slag to have structural properties equal to those of a high quality igneous rock. The slag exhibited some slight cementing action, with age, but retained the characteristics of an unbound granular material. The effect of a slight reduction in fines content was shown to cause a negligible change to the material's structural properties.
