Epoxy asphalt surfacing of west gate bridge

Asphalt manufactured with bitumen extended epoxy binder was chosen for the surfacing of the steel spans of the west gate bridge because of its ability to withstand the flexing associated with a thin surfacing over an orthotropic steel deck. Surfacing was carried out between August and November, 1978. The Country Roads Board assisted the West Gate Bridge Authority with testing of materials and secondment of personnel experienced in asphalt surfacing. The author was seconded from may to November, 1978. This paper describes testing of materials and the operations involved in the manufacture and placing of epoxy asphalt.
