A computer based materials data bank
The Country Roads Board (Victoria) Materials Research Division test results accumulated since 1968 have recently been transferred from data cards onto computer tapes, after editing some key fields of the records. The data are accessed by GIS (generalised information system) to produce periodical index listings and to deal with simple requests for sorting and listing information. Queries requiring more detailed tabulations or mathematical and statistical computations are dealt with by SPSS (statistical package for the social sciences) or by Fortran programming. The accessing method has many drawbacks and is still largely underdeveloped and slow, but the future should see the expansion of the retrieval system, especially as a tool for research (into specifications and quality control, for instance) and as a support to managerial control and decision making.
