Oil analysis diagnosis of condition of engines and transmissions of earthmoving machinery

By regularly monitoring the amount of wear metals present in oil from engines and transmissions and maintaining records of the rate of wear it is possible not only to follow the pattern of wear which develops under normal operating conditions but also possible from the departure of the normal pattern of wear to obtain an indication of abnormal conditions. As a result of introducing a programme scheduled oil analysis as described above, the Highways Department South Australia has developed a valuable tool for the diagnosis of engine and transmission condition.
