Aspects of the energy supply/ utilization/ research interactive system

Supply demand patterns of several countries are compared with that of Australia and from these comparisons certain differences in research, development and demonstration priorities in the various countries are explained. Some fictions and fallacies of energy conservation proposals are discussed and the problem of professional conservation is highlighted. Some coal and combustion research programmes are described and placed in the context of Australia's national needs. These programmes also serve to illustrate the extreme fragility of the staffing of many research groups, a fragility produced not by the shortage of research funds, but by cuts in the recurrent funds needed to preserve core staff on whose expertise the research programmes are based (a).
