VOLUME SURVEY DEVICES

DEVICES AVAILABLE FOR TRAFFIC VOLUME SURVEYS ARE DESCRIBED. THE PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION, OPERATING FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS ARE SHOWN FOR EACH DEVICE. THE DEVICES DESCRIBED EMPLOY SEVEN DIFFERENT PRINCIPLES FOR SENSING OR DETECTING THE PRESENCE OF VEHICLES. THE SENSING DEVICES ARE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES: (1) PNEUMATIC DETECTOR (ROADTUBE), (2) ELECTRIC CONTACT (TEMPORARY INSTALLATION), (4) ELECTRIC CONTACT (PEDESTRIAN TREADLES), (5) RADAR, (6) ULTRASONIC, AND (7) INFRA-RED. TWO DEVICES USED TO TRANSMIT DATA FOR REMOTE LOCATIONS ARE DESCRIBED. THE RADIO OR DIRECT WIRE ARE USED FOR TRANSMISSION OF DATA FROM REMOTE LOCATIONS. FIVE COMPONENTS EMPLOYING FIVE DIFFERENT PRINCIPLES FOR RECORDING VOLUME INFORMATION ARE SHOWN: (1) VISUAL REGISTER, (2) GRAPHIC CHART (CIRCULAR), (3) TAPE FOR COMPUTERS, (4) PHOTOGRAPHIC FILM, AND (5) PRINTED TAPE. ONE DEVICE WHICH SUMMARIZES DATA AND MANIPULATES IT IN A PARTICULAR WAY BEFORE RECORDING IS DESCRIBED. THIS DEVICE IS BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF RATE OF FLOW. A LIST OF MANUFACTURERS INDICATING WHERE THE DEVICES OR COMPONENTS MAY BE PURCHASED IS APPENDED FOR THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: SENSING DEVICES, DEVICES FOR TRANSMISSION OF DATA FROM REMOTE LOCATIONS, RECORDING DEVICES, AND MEASUREMENT DEVICES.
