The role and activities of the Central Road Research Institute of India

The paper describes the activities and role of the Central Road Research Institute, India. Research and development is carried out to serve a policy calling for minimum cost and maximum employment in roadworks. A traffic index to take account of solid wheel bullock cart traffic has been incorporated in thickness design charts. A model rural road network linking five small to one large village has been developed. The use of sand drains and waste materials has been investigated and a deflection based granular overlay design procedure developed. Labour intensive construction techniques are studied. Consultancy and technical assistance projects are undertaken with government authorities; a major study of the bombay region will collect data from households, taxi and truck operation, car drivers and pedestrians. An operating cost study has commenced with the world bank and will include studies of heterogeneous traffic. Refresher courses and training programs are conducted at the institute and at regional centres (a).
