Casualty accident rates for vehicles in use in Tasmania

This report describes the second part of a study providing information for a review of the Transport Commission's vehicle inspection program. It contains an analysis of casualty accident rates for vehicle types and an analysis of age specific casualty accident rates for cars and stationwagons and light commercial vehicles. The estimates of casualty accident rates for vehicle type were obtained from an analysis of police traffic accident reports and a vehicle use survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The age specific casualty accident rate estimates for cars and stationwagons and light commercial vehicles were obtained from an analysis of police traffic accident reports and a regression model of odometer reading and age information obtained from the vehicle condition survey conducted in 1978. Estimates of casualty accident rates for vehicle types indicate that motorcycles have by far the highest rate. Cars and stationwagons and light commercial vehicles had similar and lower accident rates than motorcycles. The lowest accident rate estimates were obtained for heavy rigid and articulated vehicles. Estimates of age specific casualty accident rates for cars and stationwagons indicated that cars aged 8 and older had significantly higher accident rates than those aged 1 to 7. For light commercials, vehicles aged 2, 6 to 11 and 15 and over had significantly higher accident rates.
