Breath alcohol vehicle interlock

An effective countermeasure programme for reducing alcohol related crashes should include attempts to alter the behaviour of drivers directly, in addition to attempts to alter the attitudes of drink drivers. This is particularly so for those drivers who are about to drive yet already are under the influence of alcohol. This paper defines a technical specification suitable for the manufacture of a prototype breath alcohol interlock system for fitment to vehicles. It includes a testing procedure to determine compliance with the specifications. The specification should be applicable to any vehicle component (not just ignition systems) that renders the vehicle inoperable by a drink driver (a).
