A visit to Canada in October 1980

During a short visit to Canada in October 1980 the author attended the Canadian Acoustical Association annual symposium and visited both the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Transport Canada Motor Vehicle Test Centre. Environmental protection, especially reducing the adverse effects of traffic noise, were observed to be major issues in Canada. Consequently, these have received much attention from all levels of government. Examples of this attention in ontario include a considerable investment in noise attenuation barriers and the establishment of strict environmental regulations governing the development of land adjacent to freeways. The leq (24 hour) noise index is used throughout Canada for traffic noise measurement and prediction. An updated US fhwa traffic noise prediction model will very probably be adopted shortly in most Canadian provinces for traffic noise prediction. There is considerable interest in Canada in developing alternative barrier designs and in other noise attenuation methods, such as road surface treatment (a).
