Diesel engine lubrication

This paper discusses the development of diesel engine lubricants and their evaluation with special reference to automotive applications. Diesel engine horsepower has increased dramatically over recent years and this, combined with the need to improve fuel economy and reduce emission levels has led to the need for higher performance diesel oils. As a result, engine builders have developed a variety of tests to assist in defining their individual requirements including problems associated with the use of high sulphur fuel and high oil consumption. Deficiencies in the current classification system are reviewed and the requirements for high performance diesel engine oils are identified.
