Incorporation of probability in the design of buried concrete pipes

A method is proposed whereby probabilistic methods are incorporated in a relatively simple manner in the design of buried concrete pipes. The recommendations associated with present methods implicitly include margins of safety through the conservative nature of the recommendations. This leads to a margin of safety in the final design and, over the years, practice has confirmed this margin to be sufficient. However, neither the current method nor results of its application to practice have led to guidelines for economics in design where appropriate conditions exist. In the method proposed, although the general form of the design method is retained, the design equation is reconstructed in a manner that permits various uncertainties and required levels of reliability to be separately considered (a).
