The nerddc motor vehicle fuel conservation programme

Some background to the formation and aims of the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Council (NERDDC) is given as an introduction to an outline of the evolving motor vehicle fuel conservation research programme. The concept of interacting traffic and vehicle subsystems as a basis for the programme is discussed and the use of models of these subsystems to evaluate the effects of policy or technological changes on fleet averaged fuel consumption and emissions is described. It is indicated that nerddc wishes to encourage cooperative work between researchers and practitioners on fuel conserving traffic management systems and their components and hopes to see the early implementation of these cost effective systems (a).
