PARAMETERS OF RECREATIONAL TRAVEL IN ONTARIO

RECREATIONAL TRAVEL HAS CREATED SERIOUS PROBLEMS ON THE ROADS OF ONTARIO. DIFFERENT TRAVELLERS - SUMMER COTTAGERS, CAMPERS, DAY VISITORS AND GUESTS AT COMMERCIAL RESORTS - ALL HAVE INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS. THIS NECESSITATES DEVELOPING NEW RESEARCH TOOLS WHICH ARE DIFFERENT FROM THOSE DEVELOPED FOR OTHER FORMS OF TRAFFIC. THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS OF ONTARIO HAS COMPILED AN INVENTORY OF THE VARIOUS KINDS OF RECREATIONAL TRIPS. USING MATHEMATICAL TECHNIQUES, SUCH AS REGRESSION ANALYSIS, GRAVITY AND OPPORTUNITY MODELS, AND FACTOR ANALYSIS, IT HAS TENTATIVELY ESTABLISHED THE PARAMETERS OF RECREATIONAL TRAVEL IN ONTARIO. DISTANCE IS THE MAJOR FACTOR' COTTAGERS DO NOT CARE TO TRAVEL TOO FAR BETWEEN HOME AND COTTAGE, CAMPERS DO NOT MIND TRAVELLING LARGE DISTANCES. GUESTS AT COMMERCIAL RESORTS PREFER TO BE QUITE FAR AWAY FROM HOME. THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES, ALSO, RELATIONS BETWEEN CARTOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS, GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, DISTANCE, AND DEOMGRAPHIC ANALYSIS AND SUGGEST THAT FUTURE PREDICTION ABOUT THE USE OF RECREATIONAL ROADS MAY BE VERY RISKY. /CGRA/
