CONSTRUCTING TANKER TERMINAL IN 100 FEET OF WATER
The new crude oil terminal at Bantry Bay, Ireland, has 100 ft deep water, so it can accept 326,000 dwt tankers. The docking pier is 1100 ft offshore, and linked to land by submarine pipe lines. Hollow steel piles, 200 ft long and 40 in. diam are used. Various constructional problems encountered are discussed, and their solutions are given.
