Temperature effects in a concrete bridge superstructure

This paper presents the results of a 3 year recording program of monitoring temperatures within a concrete box girder bridge in Brisbane, Queensland. Design variables of differential temperature, average bridge temperature and base temperature are defined and results from the bridge are presented for these variables. The shapes of measured temperature profiles at time of occurrence of maximum differential temperature are compared with a number of temperature distributions derived from various codes and other sources. A comparison between internal stresses and curvatures as calculated from both measured temperature profiles and temperature distributions as given by various codes is presented. Relationships between design variables and atmospheric parameters are given and empirical expressions for the prediction of the design variables from these parameters are developed (a).
