A two-stage pavement design model

The activities of design, construction and evaluation of pavement are integrated into one process to become a new pavement design model. The process consists of two design stages. Base course and layers below the base course are designed in the first stage. Also included in the first stage are the construction of this partially designed pavement structure, the evaluations of construction quality and structural adequacy and the material characterizations of in- situ layers. The pavement is modelled as a multilayer linear elastic system. The bituminous treated layer properties are considered viscoelastic in nature. The second stage design involves the design of surface course. It is a design phase similar to the fashion an overlay is designed. A simplified sample section is shown for illustration purposes (a).
