Overcoming the effect of deficient heavy vehicle brake legislation

The legislation referred to is the Australian design rule for commercial vehicle braking systems (ADR 35 and ADR 35a), and the deficiency is not only the exclusion of combination vehicles (trucks and trailers or semi trailers), but also ignoring these vehicles by not providing a satisfactory interface standard between truck and trailer to enable braking compatibility (stability). This paper covers a brief history of the discussions relative to this shortcoming of ADR 35, also explains the problems arising therefrom, and the research and development work leading to an acceptable solution and hopefully a revision of ADR 35.
