Pile capacity - a reliability approach

To account for the variability of soils over large depths it is desirable to use probabilistic methods to estimate the load carrying capacity of the piles. A reliability based method is proposed using monte carlo simulation technique. A parametric study is carried out for piles in clays and sands and the importance of parameters like cohesion, adhesion, angle of shearing resistance, length to diameter ratio of pile, etc., Highlighted. Results are presented in the form of plots between probability of failure and normalized load (a).
