Risk balancing for code formulation and design
Given that a certain fixed sum is to be spent on the safety of a structure, a means is developed for computing the way in which this sum should be distributed amongst various safety features to optimise the safety of the structure as a whole. Initial investment, expected failure costs and probabilities of failure are all taken into account. An analogous formulation is developed by which conflicting code factors can be balanced so that no structural type or feature is unduly penalized or favoured (a).
