Reliability analysis of frames with geometric non-linearity subject to stochastic ground accelerations

The "probability of failure" analysis of elastic- plastic one- degree- of- freedom structures excited by stochastic infrequent dynamic loads is investigated. The structure is assumed to fail when the inelastic displacement overcomes a given permissible limit. The randomness of the structural response to a whole single excitation is analysed making use of simulation methods. The time- history of the inelastic displacement stochastic process is described by a suitable markov process model. This approach is presented and its computational aspects discussed. Finally a numerical example is considered: the reliability of a portal frame subject to deterministic vertical loads in a seismic region is analysed and its sensitivity to changes in the problem parameters is discussed (a).
