Functional classification of roads

This publication has been prepared for the guidance of councils, consultants and other authorities in the preparation of road hierarchy plans based on the functional classification of roads and will assist the councils in their planning for traffic and environmental management. The guidelines herein have been developed in the context of conditions in the Sydney metropolitan area and while they are generally applicable to other smaller urban areas in the state, care needs to be exercised in this regard. It is envisaged that in due course a separate document will be prepared to cover these areas. While the underlying principles are the same in respect of both new and existing subdivisions, it should also be appreciated that this document is written essentially in terms of conditions experienced in the "built" environment.
