Great western highway - 1980
An 'inventory' type survey of the heavily trafficked great western highway has shown that the route is basically two lanes wide and constructed on a substandard alignment with limited overtaking opportunities, despite the construction of a number of new lengths of overtaking lane since 1977. A large proportion of the route passes through developed areas. Particular hazards include the many substandard curves, bridges with poorly aligned approaches, steep grades and obstacles close to the pavement. The shoulders have been generally improved since 1977 while the pavement width and condition has been upgraded in some areas. Three sections of the western freeway are currently under construction in Sydney (a).
