A study of the operation of large combination vehicles (road trains) : draft manual of inspection requirements for compliance with model specifications and permit conditions for road trains
Model specifications and permit conditions for road trains prepared by the National Association of Australian State Road Authorities (NAASRA) provide dimensional, mechanical and operational standards for large combination vehicles used as road trains. The prescribing of standards for such vehicles, of itself, will not ensure compliance, and hence a system of vehicle checking needs to be implemented. The draft manual of inspection requirements for conformity with model specifications and permit conditions has been prepared for this purpose. The manual provides for an initial inspection to be made of each vehicle prior to the issue of any permit for use as a road train unit. Subsequent checks comprising routine and random inspections are also provided for. These are to ensure that subsequent to issue of a permit each unit is maintained and continues to comply with requirements. Check lists to be used in carrying out the various inspections are included together with a form of inspection label recommended for uniform adoption in certifying vehicle compliance.
