Performance comparisons of granular basecourse materials using repeated load triaxial testing

The introduction of mechanistic design procedures has required the quantification of resilient parameters for linear elastic analysis. In association with an Austroads working group, purpose designed equipment to meet practitioner needs in addition to an Australian Standard test procedure have been developed. This project reports on the testing of five 20 mm crushed rock and three quarry rubble products from quarries in the Adelaide metropolitan area. The research indicates that some quarry rubbles have equivalent performance to some crushed rocks. Furthermore, some crushed rocks have three times the predicted pavement life of others even though they both meet current specifications. Performance in terms of absolute resilient modulus, permanent strain and sensitivity of these parameters to moisture and density are identified.
