Design and construction of a dowel jointed unreinforced concrete pavement

A dowelled plain (jointed unreinforced) concrete pavement has been constructed on the Bundoora Section of the Metropolitan Ring Road in the suburb of Greensborough to the north of Melbourne. The pavement was constructed under contract to VicRoads and was an alternative tender which at the time was found to be more competitive than a conventional concrete pavement. The depth required was less, due to the strengthening of the joints provided by the dowels. At the time of construction, it was understood that this method had never been previously used in Victoria using paver placed concrete. The paper describes the background to the decision to use this type of pavement, the design factors involved, and some of the construction aspects. Also, some aspects of the contractor's quality control system, which ensured the quality of the completed work, are described. Finally, the end product is described in terms of rideability, stength, clearance and surface texture.
