Development of a performance based chipseal specification

A performance based chipseal specification has been developed in New Zealand for single coat reseal treatments. The specification was trialled on one Transit New Zealand contract in the 1994/95 sealing season and, based on its success, has been extended to three contracts for the 1995/96 season. This paper outlines the basis of the specification which includes provision for material properties to be measured at the time of construction, and texture depth and chip retention measured after 12 months. The basis for the development of the texture depth measurements, which includes the concept of a design life for chipseals, is discussed.
