WATER-REPELLANT LIME AND ITS USE IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION /IN/ RUSSIAN/

AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO IMPROVE THE PRESERVATION OF LIME BY MAKING THE LATTER WATER-REPELLANT. THE FIRST PART OF THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES VARIOUS METHODS USED FOR THAT PURPOSE. THE USE OF NAPHTENE SOAP GIVES ONLY TEMPORARY SATISFACTORY RESULTS. BITUMINOUS MATERIALS WERE ALSO TRIED AND THE BEST RESULTS WERE OBTAINED WITH VISCOUS BITUMEN WITH WHICH LIME IS TREATED BEFORE BEING CRUSHED. THE BITUMEN CONTENT MUST BE AT LEAST 10 PER CENT. THE SECOND PART OF THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE UTILIZATION OF WATER-REPELLANT LIME FOR THE MIXED TREATMENT OF LOESS. THE ADVANTAGES OF THE METHOD ARE DESCRIBED: INCREASE IN STRENGTH, DECREASE IN THE BITUMEN CONTENT NEEDED, RESISTANCE TO FROST, AND IMPROVEMENT OF PROPERTIES WITH TIME. QUICK LIME MUST BE USED. PRECATIONS TO TAKE ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE ARE OUTLINED TOGETHER WITH THE NEED FOR ACCURATE PROPORTIONING AND DISTRIBUTION DEVICES. /TRRL/
