DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENTS BUILT ON MUD

BASED ON RESULTS OBTAINED ON EXPERIMENTAL EMBANKMENTS, METHODS ARE PRESENTED FOR DEALING WITH EACH STAGE OF THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF AN EMBANKMENT. NECESSARY SOIL INVESTIGATIONS AND SURVEYS ARE DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH THE APPROACH TO THE INTERPRETATION OF TEST RESULTS. TECHNIQUES FOR STUDYING STABILITY ARE OUTLINED AND DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A FULL-SCALE INVESTIGATION INTO THE FAILURE OF AN EMBANKMENT BUILT ON MUD. FURTHER RESEARCH IS NEEDED ON THE FORECASTING OF SETTLEMENT AND SETTLEMENT DURATION. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF STANDARD MEASURING APPARATUS AND MAIN CONSTRUCTION METHODS. THE ONLY METHODS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL ARE THE OVERLOAD METHOD AND THE USE OF VERTICAL DRAINS. /LCPC/A/TRRL/
