Analysis of crash patterns at Victorian signalised intersections
This report presents the results of a project undertaken as part of MUARC's on-going research activity on safety at signalised intersections. The objectives of this project were to: Analyse crash patterns at signalised intersections in Victoria, identify on the basis of the above, what further measures might be adopted to reduce the number and severity of crashes at signalised intersections, and indicate priority areas for further research on safety at signalised intersections. The analysis revealed that crashes at signalised intersections were of four main types - right through, rear end, adjacent approaches and pedestrian crashes. Potential countermeasures include the installation of fully controlled right turn signals, use of skid resistant pavements, an expanded red light camera program and education. Recommended research priorities include a detailed examination of sites with a poor crash record, a study of pedestrian accidents and a detailed examination of driver information processing and decision making.
