CEMENT TEST: NEW RAPID METHOD DETERMINES CEMENT DISTRIBUTION IN BASES

THE ACID-BASE TITRATION METHOD FOR CEMENT CONTENT WAS DEVELOPED BY THE CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS. RESULTS CAN BE OBTAINED ON GROUPS OF EIGHT SAMPLES IN ABOUT 45 MINUTES EXCLUDING SAMPLING AND PREPARATION TIME. THE METHOD HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE SUITABLE FOR CONTROL PURPOSES, THE STANDARD ERROR BEING PLUS OR MINUS 0.2% OF CEMENT. A DIFFERENT METHOD (CONSTANT NEUTRALIZATION METHOD) EMPLOYING THE SAME APPARATUS IS USED FOR MIXES CONTAINING AGGREGATES SUCH AS LIMESTONES OR DOLOMITES WHICH REACT WITH HYDROCHLORIC ACID. SAMPLE PREPARATION AND DETAILS OF THE TEST METHODS ARE DESCRIBED.
