Cycle Challenge
Cycle Challenge is a competition designed to bring forward innovative features and partnerships to help stimulate growth of cycling in the United Kingdom. The Department of Transport allocated two million Pounds to fund this initiative. Bids were sought from voluntary and commercial interests, as well as from public bodies. The response was enthusiastic and relevant. 230 bids were made, with an overall value of 10.7 million Pounds, offering a good range of quality schemes to select from. The paper describes the origins of the competition, its development and launch publicity. It outlines the process used for selecting the successful bids, the way in which implementation was managed, and the approach to monitoring a rich variety of projects. It gives an indication of some of the lessons learnt, and explains how the results will be disseminated to a wide audience.
