BLASTING SETTLES ROAD FILLS IN MINNESOTA MUSKEG

THE TECHNIQUES USED BY THE MINNESOTA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO ACCELERATE THE SETTLEMENT OF FILL OVER SWAMP AREAS IS DESCRIBED. PRELIMINARY SHOOTING WAS MADE WITH LIGHT CHARGES ALONG THE CENTER LINE OF THE PROPOSED HIGHWAY. AFTER SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN STARTED BY THE PRELIMINARY SHOOTING IT IS ACCELERATED BY THE DEEP SHOOTING WHICH IS DONE WITH HEAVIER CHARGES. THE SHOOTING IS BASED ON THE THEORY THAT WHEN THE EXPLOSION OCCURS THE EXPANSION OF THE GASES IS RESISTED BY THE HEAVY WEIGHT OF THE OVERLAYING FILL AND THE FIRM FOUNDATION MATERIAL BENEATH THE PEAT DEPOSIT. THE LINE OF LEAST RESISTANCE IS THROUGH THE SOFT MATERIAL UNDER THE CORE OF THE FILL. THIS MATERIAL IS DISPLACED LATERALLY AND THE FILL IS DRAWN BY GRAVITY INTO THE VOID THUS CREATED. ALSO, EXPLANATIONS AND DIAGRAMS OF THE TECHNIQUE OF PLACING ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL AS THE METHOD OF FIRING, THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CHARGES AND THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO FIRE THE DYNAMITE.
