EARTH PRESSURES IN EXPANSIVE BACKFILLS

A METHOD OF EARTH-PRESSURE ANALYSIS BASED ON A REALISTIC SWELLING-PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION ON A POTENTIAL FAILURE SURFACE WAS DEVELOPED. NUMERICAL CALCULATIONS WERE UNDERTAKEN WITH A VIEW TO COMPARING THE COEFFICIENTS OF ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE FOR EXPANSIVE AND N/N-EXPANSIVE SOIL WITH IDENTICAL SHEAR RESISTANCE.
