BUCKLING PROBLEMS IN THE DESIGN OF FIBERGLASS-REINFORCED PLASTIC SHIPS

A study is made of the local and overall instability of single-skin FRP hulls stiffened by top-hat frames and girders under uniaxial and biaxial compression. Particular reference is made to transversely framed hulls, for which existing design methods are inadequate and in some respects unsafe. Approximate formulas and data curves are developed for evaluating the instability of flat panels with top-hat frames. Comparisons are made between approximate buckling solutions and more accurate folded-plate and finite-element solutions for typical FRP structures.
