Sydney's future: an economic approach
This paper analyses the NSW Government's strategy for the future of Sydney as published in Cities for the 21st Century. The strategy has two key elements: the goal of a compact city and an emphasis on "integrated, whole-of-government urban management". This paper discusses both these key issues and, in particular, the objectives of city planning, population and housing forecasts, income and employment forecasts, location strategies for jobs and households, and transport, environmental and equity issues. In each case the paper first outlines Government policy as described in Cities and then provides analysis and suggestions. The paper concludes that there is a need for more quantified objectives and analysis and that greater weight should be given to the role of market forces.
