Vehicle safety - an overview

Road fatalities in Australia are declining while Australian Design Rules lag worlds best practice by a decade. Ever present consumer pressure for improved primary vehicle safety is now spilling over to secondary safety, pushed by the New Car Assessment Program. Airbags recently introduced in Australian passenger cars do not perform to customer expectations. Fatalities from side intrusions rival those from frontal collisions, yet passenger cars offer virtual no side intrusion protection. The Federal Office of Road Safety presides over both Australia Design Rule policy making and enforcement functions; these functions should be separated.
