Emerging issues in road safety auditing

A Road Safety Audit is a formal examination of road and traffic works, both existing and future, in relation to their accident potential and safety performance, by an independent, qualified examiner. A complete road safety audit process spans the spectrum from the feasibility study stage for new road schemes to the assessment of operational performance of existing roads. This paper provides an overview of the basic concepts of road safety audit and answers to some of the more frequently asked questions (eg What, When, Who, Why, How) about this subject, reports on the current status of road safety audit in Queensland, and discusses some of the findings of recent audits and emerging issues.
