Laboratory test results for binders used in phases one and two of the ALF deformation trial

This report provides information on the laboratory properties of the binders used in the phase one and two pavement sections of the joint AUSTROADS/AAPA ALF asphalt deformation trial in Beerburrum, Queensland. A background to the specification for each of the trial binders is given in Section 2 of the report, while Section 3 introduces the test methods and material treatments used to characterise the binders. Where the test method used is new, or not in common laboratory use, a brief explanation is provided to give the reader sufficient information to assess the significance of the reported properties. Test results on the binders are presented in Section 4, and some preliminary discussion on the collected data and testing related issues follows in Section 5. Appendix A provides detailed information on the controlled stress rheometer. Measurements of the following properties on the original binders and RTFO-treated binders are reported where the material properties were within the range of the chosen instrument: 1) Viscosity at 60 degrees Celsius and 135 degrees Celsius. 2) Consistency and elastic recovery at 60 degrees Celsius and 45 degrees Celsius. 3) Stiffness and elastic recovery at 15 degrees Celsius 4) Penetration at 15 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius. 5) Softening point. 6) Characteristic temperature Ts. 7) Complex modulus, loss modulus and storage modulus for a range of temperatures and rates of loading. 8) Phase angle for a range of temperatures and rates of loading 9) G*/sin (delta) (SHRP rutting parameter) for a range of temperatures and at selected rates of loading. The dynamic mechanical analysis (CarriMed) data are presented in the form of graphs contrasting the important properties of the binders. A limited commentary is provided on the performance related properties and the future directions of some of the newer test methods.
