Driver information and early warning system in case of dangerous road conditions

A major objective in current intelligent transportation systems programs is the improvement of traffic safety, in particular on dangerous road sections. Roadside processing techniques allow for the prevention and detection of incidents in real time. This new system called ROADGUARD consists of real time roadside traffic data processing and driver warning with active light posts. The system was initially tested on a two lane single carriageway in a mountain area and a six lane motorway, in Portugal. High performance of automatic incident detection and real-time warning of drivers was achieved in these test sections during 1992 and 1993.
