STEAM OR DIESEL FOR VLCC'S? A DIESEL ENGINE BUILDER'S VIEWPOINT
The article reviews the past history of diesel vs. steam turbine engines in tankers, and discusses present conditions and future expectations, taking into account such factors as initial investment, service reliability, fuel economy and automation cost. The article contains a number of tables comparing the overall cost of installing and operating the two engines, and the many benefits of automation are reviewed.
