GIS in environmental consulting

Dames and Moore has been actively applying GIS as an environmental decision support tool throughout the organisation since 1977 and more recently in Australia since 1987. During this period over 40 GIS applications have been developed for route and site selection, environmental impact assessment, visual impact assessment, oil spill contingency planning, land use capability, industrial planning and hazardous waste transport. Dames and Moore has undertaken and successfully completed GIS based projects in Australia and South East Asia. This paper presents a brief overview of four projects which demonstrate the unique applications developed by Dames and Moore using desktop GIS packages, to assist in solving complex, multi-disciplinary environmental assessment studies.
