Efficient land information services for effective land management - finding an acceptable bottom line for suppliers and clients

Successful land management is emerging as one of the most important tools for private and public sector land owners in the environmentally conscious 1990s. The ability to achieve sustainable land use providing economic growth in an environmentally sensitive way is directly related to our knowledge of the land and its capability. The delivery of increasingly efficient land information services enables land managers to substantially improve land management techniques. The providers of land information services need to be focussed on this important connection between the quality of their product and its effectiveness in delivering land managers the information they need to make informed decisions. This is particularly true for many public sector agencies, such as the NSW Department of Conservation and Land Management, which are vast repositories of collected knowledge about the land and which actively support both private sector and public sector land managers as the principal rationale for their existence. This is a big challenge for public sector suppliers in the land information field, and it is one being met very effectively by the NSW Department of Conservation and Land Management.
