Putting the public back into transport

The paper gives an overview of urban public transport in Sydney, identifying some of the disadvantages of its present form. It then looks at community transport, some possible definitions, its passenger market and the types of services it provides. The argument is then presented that community transport should be seen as part of the public transport system albeit dedicated to a certain task within it. Finally the paper considers community transport as a vehicle to empower communities and individuals and looks forward to when accessible public transport becomes as common and as desirable as the private car as a mode of travel.
